No, no, the "frozen wasteland" is about a thousand kilometers to the north and east. Here it's all forests and marches and a little man-made sea.

If humanity's salvation is dependant on my crotch, then humanity is fucked beyond belief. And not - as much as I want it to be - in the way that statement implies.

So Steam just enabled selling mods in the Steam Workshop. I'd be angry and sad if the idea itself wasn't so bloody stupid it hurts. Seriously, from the completely predictable user base reaction to that stupidity to the myriad of legal problems it will cause, specially with copyright issues (between dependencies and using material copyrighted from other sources? It'll be a nightmare).

In all, I'm bloody stunned and confused by the stupidity of their actions than anything else.

Hey, they've already allowed selling the Skyrim DLC that were basically an already existing mod renamed and sold for real money. This is just a logical extension of the precedent.

DLC is made by the company, selling it has been done from about they started selling computer games, so that all makes sense.

On the other hand, mods are not made by the company, are typically dependent on other mods, and have no requirements to keep the game working.

On a third hand, Steam is a giant pile of steaming dung that allows people to sell games that took two hours to make, so why is any surprised?

You missed the part where this DLC was literally a mod who was made by third-party people not associated with the company at all.

Except it was bought by the company and tested/tweaked a bit before release, presumably.  Giving it "legitimacy".

Looking at some of the stuff even triple-A companies produce, though, I don't think that legitimacy is worth anything more than the specific company's reputation.  It's not trustworthy because "some company made it", it's trustworthy because people trust Bethesda (to SOME extent).  Steam's had a framework for crowd-reviewing games and mods for a while now.  I see no reason a mod development group should be auto-prohibited from selling a product just because they aren't a "proper" game company.  That said, of course most pay-mods are going to be absolute shovelware.

Just like the entire rest of the "legitimate" marketplace!

(Of course there are also legal issues with selling game mods)

The legal issues are quite massive yes, but its actualy not something that courts in the US and throughout the EU haven't dealt with yet. Reselling digital copies of games caused a similar stir in the legal world, this will likely also cause its own lawsuits, but it'll depend on each case. The problem is defining will be reaching a legal definition of what makes a mod "its own thing", that just uses assets from another game, or just the exact same game that got a aesthetic makeover.

I do think, however, that if you're actualy selling just a mod of a certain game, that the company that has the right for the game you modded should at least get a share of your earnings.
