One of my cousins that almost the same age as me is getting married(fresh college grad age). Also it's apparently US tradition for the bride's family to pay for the marriage.

That's really really strange to me. If one of my sisters get married, I'd punch the guy if they want us to pay for it.

LOL, what? My brother and his wife paid for their own marriage.

I assume in super rich hoighty-toighty circles, that might fly. For virtually the rest of the population, that's absurd.

I'm pretty sure dowries are a thing that stopped existing a long time ago. That's some Shakespearean shit.

Dowries where still a common thing in first world nations until ~1930-1940, and are very much a thing is second and third world nations.

There's also the "Last great party" effect - girls traditionally have major parties to mark significant milestones - much more so than boys, traditionally- such as the sweet sixteen/Quinceañera or the now-rare "coming out" party, which are naturally paid for by her parents. A grand wedding is something of a capstone to this.

How do you react when someone asks you to describe something, then responds to everything you explain with disinterest or derision?

You punch them in the throat, of course. Then run away laughing.
On a more serious note, it depends on how much you even care about what they asked you to describe? Like, if you didn't care in the first place, an appropriate reaction would be 'why'd you ask me in the first place?' and then probably forget about it.
If you really cared and tried as best as you could, though, the proper reaction is, well...
I'd say getting angry, but what good is that gonna do? I dunno.

Pretty sure that's a dowry/bride price, and whoever was telling you it was US tradition was pulling a fast one on ya. :P

US/Western is pretty much the place where dowries died :P Meanwhile, (rural?) India still goes strong. To the point where you hear about people anguished about having another daughter/killing baby girls because they can't afford the price. At the very least it's a cultural motif, in Bollywood movies and such.

Why wouldn't it exist? It's only the best game ever made, easily beating everything else.

In which case, how do you propose they are developed? It's like taking copyright protection from artists without the artists' benefit of having enough of an individual personality and connection to the customers that they could viably depend on the customer goodwill.

Isn't copyright law more about protecting the interests of sleazy record producers?
Perhaps, but that's sorta the point - an artist could get by on the customer goodwill - not every one all the time. Suppliers of basically industrial raw resources such as agricultural biotech companies equally depend on the copyright law as status quo - but unlike the former, they don't really have an alternative if they lose it.

Even still, if it were about protecting record producers, it's only a non-issue nowadays, where a musician may reliably craft and disseminate their work online, using readily accessible, if sometimes specialist, software - but that's only the case thanks to home computing and the Internet - if you would remove copyright laws a hundred (random number, less would probably work better) years ago, you'd get roughly the same situation as Biotech is in nowadays.

Either you'd protect the producers, sleazy as they may be, or you would harm everyone by putting the only people with the infrastructure to meet the needs of secondary producers - musicians in this case - out of business, either until the remaining surviving producers are even more of a monopoly or until *nobody* can release a LP because there is nobody able to handle it.

I think media would still be produced in sufficient amounts to meet consumer demand even if the for-profit movie and record industries went bust. There's more than enough people out there with the inclination to record songs and videos just for the hell of it and it's not like the equipment involved is expensive or requires special training to use (especially in the case of songs; for films you might need training for animation or cgi or to make decent looking backdrops for live action, but for songs you just need a microphone - already built into your computer - a copy of Audacity - which is free - and depending on how good your singing is possibly a copy of GSNAP - also free)

EDIT:
And as for the people who depend on the commercial film and record industries to make a living, they can go to hell along with the lamplighters, the sword makers, the steamboat pilots, the manual weavers, and the makers of stone tools

Unfortunately, you can't punch people through the internet. Yet.

A friend asked me to describe what happened over the weekend, and responded to everything I said with something along the lines of "I don't care. Keep explaining though".
