There should just be a greater number of worldgen night creatures that attack you at night instead. That's fun.

Getting your character curbstomped by some nameless creature that doesn't even exist for more than a few ingame hours isn't fun.

Personally, I'd like to see bogeymen perhaps as more of an emotional thing. They're a manifestation of fear, they're there to freak you out, not just murder you. Or have you kite them around for a few hours gradually slashing them to bits.

Make them less murderous, and more malicious.

S'always a hell of a thing when you give a cage full of dinosaurs an assortment of food and the beeline straight for the dino eggs in the pile. Ovarian cannibal orgy? Something like that. Freaking dinosaurs. Hateful little omnivorous bastards.

Bogeymen themselves will likely never leave. They've simply become too ingrained and canonical into the game to be kicked out. But they will likely be toned down in the future.

I don't think bogeymen are that ingrained. They seem weirdly temporary and detached from the world's history compared to other creatures in DF. Are they even active in world generation?

They are cool creatures, though. They just need a more specific and narrow use.

It's a popular theory in the ol' adventure forum that bogeymen are just manifestations of the adventurer's fear. The bogeymen killing the adventurer is the adventurer killing themself; only the toughest, coldest and seasoned veteran adventurers will survive the night alone. Otherwise, bring a companion - you certainly won't feel the crushing expanse of the nighttime wilderness with a friend by your side.

It's also planned that adventurers will be able to follow bogeymen back into the world they come from... Now that, that should be interesting.
