Wait, people thought all fairies were disneyesque? I always thought that was just a depiction for children. Stands to reason fairies would be asses, considering all the evil elf/fairy tales you hear.

Eh, hate to break it to you, but most people have never heard that fairies ever showed up anywhere *except* children's tales. Hell, a fairy tale is interchangeable with a children's story, after all.

The number of evil elf/fairy tales you hear is a cultural thing mainly. Here in the US lots of times the only stories of fairies that people have heard are those that Disney makes, so it makes sense that they would think that that is the only type. Go outside of the USA and folklore or stories involving dark and cruel fairies start to pop up much more often, so people hear about them more.

They've obviously never read the original fairy tales that the Disney-fied versions are based off of. Most of them are pretty messed up.

There is also Shakespeare and his Midsummer Night's Dream, for instance. Fairies are complete asses to people there.

And then there's just folk stories and old wives' tales and other things like that. It turns out that to impart a moral the easiest way to do it is to have the person get cannibalised or tortured if they don't heed the advice.

Yeah, when we had a Swiss exchange student we always would joke about how their fairy/folk tales went something like this: "There was a little boy who always played near the bear pit. Then one day he fell in, and then the bears ate him. And that's why you shouldn't play near the bear pig."

Seriously, it's like every Swiss fairytale involved someone being eaten by a bear.

I fixed the problem now, but I was receiving a notification on the Fanfiction.net forums (Don't judge me.) from one of the topics, that was getting around the same amount of post as the WTF thread here.

So, for comparison, I got an e-mail every time someone posted in this topic.
