I just found out that Americans don't call toques toques. I'm honestly kind of weirded out by it.

because i've always called them toques...

and that's pronounced took like foot but with "tk" right

Up here it's basically 'two' with a k shoved on the end. But apparently they're not called that in most of the US. Apparently 'beanie' is used in the western states, at least.

? I always thought of them as slightly different.

I doubt that this is a regional affectation, either, probably some weird personal thing I picked up and never got called out on because nobody wears hats around here (or at the very least, nobody cares what hat you're wearing).

In NZ it's usually called a beanie or "wooly hat".

Toques are the fancy chef hats with all the folds around the edge everywhere except Canada, where they are knit caps. (I personally have only heard the term as part of a joke in a comic).

Also, a fair few games have been using toque to name those sorts of things, mostly "The long dark" and "Rimworld".
