But I'm pretty sure we never bought a PS1 (we were a Nintendo family), so my wtf still stands.

Also totes plug it in, see if it works. Don't need a disc for that, I think. And then maybe get some USB adapters for the controllers, if you don't already have a USB controller. PS1 controllers make pretty good computer controllers, iirc.

E: Jeez, I forgotten about that. Edge enough to cut yourself on. Tactics Ogre actually has you kill a pregnant woman in open combat. That's pretty hardcore for a game originally made in '95...

Check the memory cartridge for any files. If any of them are jumbled, corrupt data, you might not want to use that cartridge, lest you get devoured by some spirit of a murdered child or an extradimensional monster or what have you.

Holy shit, the thing actually appears to be working. The memory card even had some data on it: some NFL game from 2001 and something called Syphon Filter 2. If any of the data was jumbled or corrupt, I can't tell. It deleted just fine in any case.

I'm not getting any sound in the main menu (could be a problem with the TV, I didn't mess around very much) and I'm not sure if the color's working entirely right (there are odd rainbow effects here and there that I don't 100% think are intentional, though the icons for the save data appeared to be fine so who knows?), but the damn thing turns on and the first controller seems fully functional.

Now what the hell am I gonna do with a 21-year-old console that I don't have any games for and never anticipated owning?
