They are:  Our [good] commercials are almost as entertaining as the shows.

True fact:  the Superbowl has the highest priced commercial airtime in the world.

Steam just took 10 minutes to download a 180mb update, had a heart attack, and crashed. Now I can't open it or end the process via task manager.....

Ow. Sounds like you are going to need to restart or use alt-tab to be able to use your cursor on the Windows bottom row of windows and close those tabs.

Speaking of big pharma, I just saw a commercial for some weightloss drug in which they said (paraphrased) that they didn't actually understand how the active component operated. They just know that it causes weight loss. I mean, shit, if I needed to lose weight and was lazy/desperate enough to use pills instead of diet and exercise, I think I'd rather hear "Yeah, this is full of tapeworms" than that.

Short term solutions beat only slightly longer term death health complications, right?

... sometimes it is. You fix the immediate problem while banking that you'll be able to fix the longer term problems that arise from it. If the choice is between definite fatal coronary now and possible (and possibly fixable) cancer later, well...

This is a gamble only when the latter prediction is accurate... and pursued.

Like emergency epinephrine shots. It'll save your life, but you'll feel like shit for a while. Plus vomit your guts out (dehydration), get a severe headache, be super-weak for a while, etc. etc.

So is that better or worse than writing on the box:

Scientifically Proven*

* When combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise program

My personal "favorite" is "contains plant extracts that have been clinically studied for weight loss."

So does that mean they studied to find out if it helped, but it only makes things worse and they sell it for that anyways?

My favourite was one that just state outright that no study has actually found the active ingrediant has any effect (in very small writing on the back, of course). I think it was a throat lozenge with some antibiotoc ingredient.

Obviously something better then severe, and even moderate, death.
