Okay, the thing about that is that a freaking kukri can cut a human in half in reality with enough force. It's perfectly reasonable to have two-handed swords and short swords not have any real contact difference against humanoids.

You don't quite get it. The contact hit area of a short sword is 20000. The contact area of an elephant's leg is about 2000.

That's why cutting into large-sized creatures is so hard - you don't cut them - you peel them open like an orange.

I'm pretty sure the scale would be different. Without access to the code itself it's hard to tell, but I doubt the sword blade is actually bigger than an elephant's leg... barring some horrendous mixup.

I think Toady intended for slashing damage to be different from piercing damage, but didn't had the time to implement that during the material rewrite. And nobody reported it as a bug, because of interface hiding useful information.

Remember that bug where 90% creatures did not grow up properly? It was only discovered by accident, because everybody thought that war animals were supposed to be weak.
