Well, it's a moderate price now, plus regular maintenance (in both time and money) until something happens to them that can't be fixed. Moderate price now, plus small price weekly or thereabouts (or after every use, depending on washing methods) and eventual repeat. Also minutely higher infrastructure costs involved (somewhere to put them -- plastics can generally just be left in their box).

The plastic alternative is small price now, and then a further small price every month or so, with less (or no) maintenance costs. Greater externalities involved, though. Probably. Not actually sure how plastic disposal stacks up against the waste involved with keeping cutlery clean.

Plastic spoons generally work just fine, by the by. Forks and knives are a bit sketchier, but spoons do alright.

I have managed to jam pencils into my hands, and wound myself, multiple times. I have never been injured by plastic cutlery.

I've seen people get successfully cut by plastic knives before. Mostly by kids who think that just because they are made of plastic, it's okay to grate the edge back-and-forth across your skin.

I remember this one time around grade five or six that a kid had his hand torn open because some other kid grabbed him by the wrist and just kept stabbing his hand with a pencil.

on cutlery, this is how I did it.

Go to a good will or whatever (avoid salvation army, they are horrible and should never be supported. Actually, good will is pretty bad, too, abusing mentally disabled workers. Point being, go somewhere where used stuff is being sold.) Buy functional but used metal cutlery. Succeed at not enlarging the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (or Atlantic, or Indian Ocean, depending on location.)

It's fairly cheap, and if you can store plasticwear in a cardboard box, you could just do that with metal cutlery, or just stick it in a tall cup really.

Our schools banned them (and Silly bands, and a host of other novelty crap) because they were distractions.
