I finally found out what this 'gamergate' debacle I occasionally heard about is. From my (admittedly limited) understanding, it seems to amount to two factions screaming obscenities and threats at each other whilst they argue about two completely different topics (industry corruption and female representation) as if they were mutually exclusive or something.

Just watched the second Hunger Games movie.  Here's something I don't understand...

This is a consistent trend with these stories, and I imagine it's a thing in real life, too.  Specifically in these situations where there is one clear dictator in charge of all the bad shit.  One person acting as a lynchpin.

There are always these secret rebellions with people operating on the inside.  People who are willing to give their lives for the cause of bringing down whatever empire.  Often people with direct access to that one big bad guy.  In the case of this movie, there are several points where people in the rebellion have time alone with Snow, or at least in closer proximity than any protection.  Wouldn't grabbing whatever random object is near and bashing the old guy's head in be a lot more certain and effective than carrying out a bunch of fragile plots and leading a massive rebellion for the sake of the same ultimate goal?  Yeah, you probably won't survive long after the act.  But you were willing to take all kinds of risk and in the end lay down your life anyway, right?  With any conviction (teeth or blunt trauma to throat), you should only need a few seconds to end some pampered elderly guy's life with your bare hands.  Just do it.

The Hunger Games have been going on for 75 years. They're a harsh reality in the Districts, while in the Capital they're nothing more than yearly entertainments. In both cases, they're The Way Things Are. This can't just be propaganda either, as one of the "returning champions" was a rather elderly woman.  Snow probably wasn't even born when the Games began, and he sure as hell wasn't in any real position of power. Snow isn't the real problem, he's just the one in power when things start to go wobbly and the entire rotten mess starts to fall in. Bashing in Snow's head would result in nothing more than a new President, a round of massacres, and then business as usual. The only way to stop the Games is to tear down and obliterate the entire society, and to do that they need Snow alive. He, at least, is a fool that can be manipulated to fan the fires instead of quietly solving the problem (it would have been far, far wiser for him just to let Katniss say whatever she wanted in her "victory tour", take her back to the capital, and arrange a "sudden fatal illness" or simply disappear her instead of the crackdown he panicked and threw into place, for one thing.)

Yeah, I recognize that assassinating Snow wouldn't be immediate happy ending.  But it would be huge.  The whole plot of the second movie is to give the people hope and rally them to fight.  I can't think of a more direct and powerful rallying cry than "Hey I just killed the highest ranking enemy."  In addition to immediate weakening of the structural order of the capital, making it easier to fight against.

The film strongly implies that the war that led to the creation of Panem was a nuclear war, with the Districts being populated by the descendents of the losers. For anyone to agree to such a nasty treaty would require that they weren't simply beaten, or even crushed. They had to have been absolutely and completely destroyed, with only the treaty sitting between them and total annihilation. It would take at least a generation or two, possibly even three, for a people beaten that badly to even think about trying to resist as a group. By then, the Games would have been so firmly entrenched in the culture that they're just another harsh reality in a harsh world.

Moreover, it is likely that people like Katniss are quite rare. One district adopted the practice of preselecting Tributes that would volunteer, but they fought to win, while the random lottery the rest put up with would produce Tributes that didn't want to be selected and cared only about staying alive as long as they could, caring less than nothing about anybody except possibly the other Tribute from their home. Families in this verse don't appear to be very large, so situations where there are two eligible siblings in one family probably aren't too common, and having one of a pair be selected and having the other be brave enough and devoted enough to essentially commit suicide to save them is probably a very rare event. Having that volunteer not only dominate the Games but do so while keeping her humanity enough to mourn and honor a girl (note that it wasn't Rue's death that set off the riots, that only produced the horror and grief that the Games are meant to inspire. It was the way Katniss treated the body that inspired the viewers to fight) that has to die for her to live? Probably unprecedented.

That's the thing. Assassinating Snow wouldn't do that. The resulting bloody reprisals (if the acted as historical dictatorships did, they'd probably kill between 10,000 and 100,000 people in retaliation), coupled with the ascencion of a ruthless, competent ruler that would follow up on them properly, would result in a broken people that were utterly convinced that raising a hand against the Capital, no matter how much you might hate them, is nothing more than suicide. As things went, they have a somewhat deranged ruler that can't even manage to kill one teenaged girl properly, and they botched the destruction of District 12, as a large portion of the population survived. There's a reason why the British stopped assassinating Nazi officials after Heydrich and made little effort to knock off Hitler. It wasn't due to lack of opportunity, as German security had more holes than a colander (as proved by the multiple domestic assassiation attempts that failed only due to luck). They just realized it was an absolutely terrible idea. Assassinations do not work.

I think it's a valid opinion, but still I don't think it would work. Sure, you'd have "Someone killed the oppressive figure, let's rebel!" but would that be enough? IN rebellions, people need some sort of a symbol. In this case, you'd have a sole sacrificial lamb, which would be enough to inspire some people. But if you do it like they are doing it in the movies, you have a LIVING symbol, one who people are willing to follow and, most of all, listen. I think it's important in rebellions people are led by an example and to maintain the cohesiveness of rebellion, you need a strong, living example. You could speculate all the past rebellions, if they were, failed because there was an idea of rebellion present, but as they were all crushed eventually and because of that people are afraid to rebel now. Kill the Snow, yes, but what then when such "hero" dies again? Katniss is, partially unwillingly, used as a centerpiece of rebellion because she rebelled once and she still lives.

My guess is there might have been past, smaller rebellions but in any case they were quickly crushed. The reason why exactly did Rue's death cause one was because, my guess again, Katniss showed more compassion than it was expected from people competing in the past. Up till then people were interested in just surviving, no time for friendship. Also, the director was stupid enough to show that burial scene, but then again Katniss did grow to become public's sweetheart so he was almost "forced" to do that.

Lord Shonus might have explained that better than me though.

I only read the first book, so my explanation might not explain much, but

it specifically states that the reason for the Games is that 75 years ago, there was a rebellion. The rebels lost, lost hard. There used to be 13 Districts. The ruins of District 13 are still burning and radioactive. The Hunger Games were the punishment for the survivors.

Also note that the director had to show what Kat did to Rue's body, since they had to show the removal of the body. They didn't show(in the book) Katniss singing to her until she finally died.
