... You realize you just asked me "take away the part that keeps you continuous, are you still continuous then?!" Right?

So you do think that being cryogenically frozen then perfectly revived would in fact kill you, and replace you with a clone that looked, acted, and thought exactly like you did, then?

How is sleeping irrelevant?

The whole point is that the guy is suggesting the teleporter kills you because you lose consciousness. However, you also lose consciousness when you sleep thus by that logic sleep is killing you as well.
The point wasn't about losing consciousness during teleportation, the teleportation is instant. The idea is that because it's different matter being used to reconstruct the teleported object that it isn't the same person.
Which is wrong if you also assert that people aren't dying all the time. Since the arrangement of a human does not remain constant, the brain is changing all the time. Whether awake or not. So either the teleporting is not killing the input person (despite preserving their memories and such), or people are dying and being replaced constantly. Sleep doesn't factor into it.

Another argument with my project partners. This time over the definition of 'purpose'.

Apparently the purpose of a report is not the reason you are writing it. The purpose is only the benefits of the proposition, and the rest is all superfluous fluff. Even if the report is to dissuade the reader from an action.

Also, one of the guys in my class is incredibly creepy. Bugging all of the girls, even after they tell him to get lost. Somewhat reminiscent of a stalker. Or an incredibly desperate person trying too hard to be cool.

E: Grammar.

While I do think that continuity is a Wrong Idea™, it's not what the comic was about.

If someone were to delete the universe and restore it from a backup, nobody would notice the discontinuity, so nobody would care. So why are you putting so much value in continuity if you can't even perceive it?

It looked like you had moved on from the comic and to more just general nightmare-inducing existential stuff, TBH.

Please don't provide more fuel for existential nightmares.

What? Are you sure? I thought continuity was actually exactly what the comic was about. At least the greater part of it. It started off about things changing, but it pretty quickly switched over the continuity of consciousness.

Yeah, the problem about teleportation is continuity. Even though I die all the time when I'm awake, in my point of view I'm still traveling a linear path. If I teleport, I branch into two different person, and my original branch is destroyed. That's still not linear.

wouldn't being cryogenically frozen actually be better than sleeping because when you're frozen in at a few kelvin i think there's going to be less atoms switched out than if you're sleeping at three hundred kelvin.

Please don't provide more fuel for existential nightmares.
An existential nightmare is just a conflict of ideas and/or values that you don't want to or don't feel able to resolve, usually because rejecting either statement would then conflict with other, more fundamental ideas or values you have, and you are unwilling to follow through and reject those too. They're basically pure cognitive dissonance, dude.

Water expands when frozen.

Which is lethal, because cells actually have water in them, yanno. Which is precisely why it's done in such a way that does NOT cause it to expand, such as superheating then flash-freezing.

And water expanding preserves the number and type of molecules, it's just that each molecule of water forms hydrogen bonds with adjacent molecules in a crystalline structure - called, by the specialists, 'ice' - that, by necessity, takes up more space than the far more anarchic liquid, where the particles are free to squeeze between each other.

And yes, that would lead to less atoms being switched - the entire point of cryonics is that in extremely low temperatures biochemical processes grind to a halt.

We are doomed. It's just that whatever is going to kill us all just happens to be, from a scientific standpoint, pretty frickin' awesome.

The comic makes it clear that the teleportation is perfectly instantaneous. And the rest of it was about continuity I guess, but in a way that is blatantly wrong, no matter which way you look at it.
