It's hard to fight school training you for 12 straight years that pluto is a planet, always will be a planet, and that the school is never wrong because you will get marks off your test that is the only meaning of your existence until you graduate if you think so.

Compared to 12 years of it being drilled into your head the simple logic of Pluto not being a planet because it hasn't cleared it's orbit takes a back seat.  Was probably the same deal with folks when Ceres was taken off the planet list.

Now that we've all established that we were all lied to about all the sciency things, lets invent a way to explain to a third year/grade student, a 8-10 year old kid, how light works, without using physics equations they also don't understand yet. Explain it to them without lying to them, using an analogy that is itself incorrect, or giving them a migraine/making them cry.

I tried so hard to explain things to my nephew. It doesn't work.

I don't think it was discovered, so much as the definition of "planet" rewritten in a matter inconvenient for the planethood of Pluto. We already knew Pluto was really goddamn tiny and hadn't cleared its orbit of other objects.

Pluto was downgraded from planet in 2006 according to wikipedia.  I got out of high school in 2001 so they were still teaching that in my day.

Okay, this is bizarre. My browser just seems to randomly lose its ability to do some things.

On this forum, for instance. Last night and for some time this morning, I could use it like normal. But then just before I went to work, submitting a post would give me a blank page instead of taking me to the subforum I posted in. The post still goes through, but I need to go back to the Post Reply page in order to resume browsing normally.

On other websites, AdBlock Plus has decided to stop blocking ads. It is still installed and claims to be working, but the ads load anyway.
