My wtf facepalm: You know the rocket that exploded yesterday? Apparently it used 40 year old Russian rocket engines. Even if they were American manufactured engines, 40 years is still OLD compared to how much things have changed with rocketry.

You'd be surprised at how little rocketry has changed in the last few decades. Pretty much all launchers today are heavily based in technology developed during the space race. Hell the Soyuz rocket has been around since the late 60's and it's still the most reliable launch vehicle we've got (not to mention the only one currently sending people to orbit). As long as the engine wasn't physically 40 years old it's not really facepalm worthy.

They're leftovers from old stockpiles originally intended for the N1 moon rockets. You know, the ones known for creating the largest non-nuclear explosions in history.

My WTF I am probably yet again about to learn something from Bay12, but diagrams and schematics always facinated me.  And it bugs me that I can't figure this out.

So pulling the trigger causes the little arm to lift up, pressing the weird thing labelled 'A' up on the back side.  'A' Being lifted on the back causes the thing above A to move forward, I'm guessing quite quickly from the size of that spring.  The thing above A hits what looks to be the back of the chamber, and presumably the shock travels through that wall with the power of magic and hits the bullet on the other side setting off the primer and firing the bullet.

When the trigger is released the 'A' thing goes back to it's original position, but I don't see anything that causes the big spring loaded thing above A to re-tension to cause A to be holding it in place again.  Maybe it's pulled back by hand?  That explains the bit that sticks out the back, But I don't recall ever seeing any movies where pulling a pin back was part of reloading the gun.

Also I'm not entirely sure of what that thing in front of the trigger is.  My best guess is it's the safety, but I don't see how that could ever prevent the gun from firing, and the mini spring under it makes no sense.

Oh derp I never considered that.  I was thinking it was pulled back from the back of the gun, which seemed awkward to say the least.  But a bolt action (handle...thing?) not being visible makes sense.  Carry on.

Also likely a gas-powered semi-automatic. The expansion of the gunpowder blast is more than enough to prime the spring for the next round.

That's a bolt-action rifle. A semi-auto wouldn't have that thing protruding from the back (that's the bolt).
