Actually I can sort of see the benefits. You are allowed to get out of the conscription by basically giving your time to work as a full-time volunteer in certain places instead. For example I have a friend who spent his time helping to take care of old people instead of working with the military, and I get the feeling from him that a lot of people do similar things.

Checking wikipedia tells me that Swiss civilian service applications are accepted like 90% of the time, so it's like you get a choice between serving in the military for a year or serving as a civil servant for a year.
