This reminds me; I've always wondered as to why countries are almost always referred to as being female.

I'm going to start messing with people promoting gender equality by referring to boats and countries as male.

Just a note, slavery as a whole in the south was actually diminishing until the cotton gin popped up, which made the whole thing a lot less labor intensive to process...

...I wonder in how many countries with a north-south divide, it's the south that is the shit (by various metrics) one? I mean, there's the USA, UK, Italy, and Spain that I can think of where it is the case, and France where it's the opposite.

As a guy living in Texas I will say this is only slightly racist. I mean, hey, it's kinda true right. Live in city areas like Central Texas, ala Austin or Houston or Dallas, and it's not terribly pronounced. Go to small towns or something, and suddenly it's all Wild West all up in here, I tell ya hwat.

Funny historical footnote, the U.S. southern accent is originally derived from the upper-middle-class families of immigrants who were affecting the speech patterns of British nobility of the time in order to be perceived as high-status individuals. It's since come to be associated with poor education for entirely different reasons.

Assuming that I'm remembering this tidbit correctly, of course. I'd call it ~90% certainty on the broader aspects at least.
