As an American I feel that way anyway.  Limiting people to two specific parties got us into the mess we're in nowadays.

Polarization in America.

Its probably  just a simplification of an already simple straw-man.  Why get as creative as 'Tea-Bagger' or 'Demoncrat' when you could just say the word liberal with sufficient disgust.  And since 'conservative' and 'liberal' are stances and not parties, you can stretch them to cover a wide swathe of people.

The word "liberal" also has a strong connotation in many cases of "Ivory tower intellectualism," (people who base their ideas on how the world should be run based entirely on their own pet theories without any real practical experience or genuine understanding of the world at large) and in other places of the "Limo Liberal" (wealthy people, often celebrities, who quite happily (and hypocritically) profit from and indulge in the very cultural issues they criticize (for example, decrying global warming while being chauffeured around in a limo rather than driving a fuel-efficient car or taking public transportation, or loudly decrying social and economic inequality while getting most of their income from very traditional sources)), The two often overlap, and are extremely negative images.

EDIT: "Conservative" carries a lot of similar-but-opposite baggage, being often linked to racism, ignorance, and greed. The fact that "liberal" and "conservative" really mean "we should embrace change" and "we need to take change slowly, and think very carefully about what we change" is generally ignored.

Usually, in America, I've seen 'liberal' and 'conservative' used to describe political leanings, rather than party. For example, FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) was a rather liberal Republican, whilst JFK (John F. Kennedy) was a pretty conservative Democrat.

Also, I use conservative as an insult, but only when I'm being facetious.

Is that old republican or recent republican? I remember the two sides have swapped names in us history but I don't remember when it was. Possibly more than once.
