When in fact by episode 1 logic... YEAH... contracting AIDs has a pretty good chance of giving you force powers.

I honestly thought that was what it was at first and that people were jumping the gun and being irrational. Honestly a relatively harmless disease that can only be found in people who are force sensitive because they live off the force (or require a force enriched environment to survive) is actually kind of interesting because who knows how the force interacts with other life forms. It would make a very good test of force potential without weakening the sort of mysticism the series had until that point.

Until I read supplementary material and paid closer attention to what was being said...

I actually have nothing against people who like the idea of Midichlorians. I just thought the time to properly establish them has LONG since passed by the time they came around... and it would have been far better to just outright not bring them up. It needed to be brought up in the 2nd movie not the 4th after several books, games, and TV shows spanning decades.

If you read the Wookiepedia article on Midi-chlorians it says that they're only meant to be indicators of force-sensitivity; they don't actually make it or anything like that. So apparently the whole thing was just very poorly explained.

Basically the problem with midi-chlorians was that they were the answer that, quoth the Simpsons, nobody asked. The suspension of disbelief was already there, so all it did was transfer the specialness of the Force to the new things that nobody heard or cared about.

I have a confession to make, I... enjoyed the prequels. Yes, they had some questionable choices (Binks) but in general, they're actually pretty good movies. I still enjoy the original trilogy better, but the prequels don't make me want to curl up in a corner or anything.
I think it's a symptom of the internet where, when something contains one or two bad features, we like to run screaming how awful the whole is. It's like, if I have a bruised apple, I cut the bruises out, I don't trash the whole thing, that's a waste of a delicious apple.

Except for JarJar yes, and even he got better in the later films when he became less "comic relief" and matured slightly.
