I've been reading 1984, and I found myself taking notes on what the Party did to keep power. I think this is why I should never be allowed to rule a country.
Its study.  There are whooe fields of political study and socio/Psychology devoted to it.  embrace it, love, welcome to it.

That's actually an old cheat, science-flavored magic is around as old as pulp stories, if not more. It IS magic, it's the Fiction part of Science Fiction, not the Science part - the writer may handwave it as FURTUR TECHS but it's still magic unless it's actually based in modern day science.

Mind you, it's not inherently wrong, but it's still, as far as devices go, magic cosplaying as science.
That is indeed a thing that happens. And yes, Doctor Who does fall under that category.

For my WTF today, I found out about some of the statistics Steam tracks. Things of note:
  • In the past week, Antarctica has downloaded 6MB from Steam.
  • Only around 50% of people completed HL2:EP1
  • There is a weird spike for completion time for EP2 at 5.7 hrs, where is way higher than you would expect for the general curve

EDIT: Holy shit there are death maps for Episode 2. This is the best thing.

Yeah, because if you take your advice from a fictional book, your country will go to pot.

I would expect that the article for a huge online community on an online encyclopaedia that can be added to by the community as a whole would be of decent quality.

Well, the book basically describes what Stalin (and, to a lesser extent, Hitler) did. It's really just taking advice from one of the most capable politicians of all ages in a rather roundabout way.
It's pretty easy to read 1984 as a manual. I did it, too.

One of my favourite things about it was the admittedly unreliable narration. I mean there are some stories that tell you partway through that you don't know perfectly what's going on, but usually clarify at some point. But in 1984 it's just winston is kill and then end.

I was mad when I got done with the book.  Only one boob reference and I was generally unsatisfied after finishing.

Of course, I was like 12 too.

I loved the ending. It showed just how powerful the Party was, and how powerless the people are.
