No Portugal, the GDR exists, Austria's gotten fat...

Where's that from?

You monster.
Why am I a monster?
Your blood is pure syrup. I know not one man, woman or child who can boast such a thing and claim to be living. Ergo, you must be some sort of abortive experiment gone rogue from a scientist who has gone too far, or perhaps the demonic hellspawn of a satanic ritual that was conducted in the midst of the Canadian maple syrup reserve.

Some university newspaper from Oklahoma.

Here's the full map, apparently the newspaper staff found it on Google Image Search and thought it was the real map of the world.

My favourite tea is sugared-up mint tea, by the way.

Mine is mint tea with a lot of milk and honey.

Buckwheat honey is also very... different and interesting. I wouldn't put it in my tea. It's dark brown and has a flavor that reminds me of soy sauce.

This sounds very interesting. I want some.

Clearly this is some alternate universe newspaper where whatever happened in some fella's EU4 game became historical fact

Looking at the world map, I'd actually hazard a guess that that's what the lazy image-googler used.

We are doomed. It's just that whatever is going to kill us all just happens to be, from a scientific standpoint, pretty frickin' awesome.

Maybe it's supposed to be a 'regional coverage map'? Dividing eastern russia up makes less sense because it's less heavily populated than the western part.

In what context is that map anyway? OUDaily just leads to the Oklahoma University newspaper.

It kind of looks like a historical map, but Sweden has its pre-1658 borders, while Finland is independent. And it has a cold water harbour...
America looks like it is divided roughly between the pre-columbian american cultural groups... the United Kingdom-Ireland borders are up to date, though...
Korea is united, also, balkanized Siberia...
Is that an Independent Kurdistan? I do feel like I am watching an EU4 map.

My guess is: artefact from alternate universe that was transported to our world through a freak accident involving dimensional gates and bowls of breakfast cereal with milk.

Edit: Also: Germany is divided... and am I seeing it wrong, or does Belgium own Alsace-Lorraine?
Also, I think there is some kind of Enclave around the Suez canal

What about that odd enclave in what's supposed to be Egypt? Looks like it's supposed to be the city state of Cairo, but it's kind of off in the desert and not on the Nile.

Looks like some sort of Alternate History project.

I think I spot an independent city state of Constantinople? Either that or it's an exclave of the greece blob.

It's on the wrong side of the strait anyway.

How could you mess up a map of the world so badly? Apart from maybe showing it as one country in total... But that seems more laziness. This is bizarrely specific.

I would love to know what context that map is in.

I believe that's what you call a conformal map.

Basically 2 kinds o' maps :D
Depicting the accurate sizes of objects on the map, or depicting accurate shapes of these objects. You cannot have both, though ['correct' maps we commonly see nowadays are hybrids, both conformal and equivalent [equidistant] maps] {due to measuring and other factors}. The more accurately you depict shape, the less accurate will be your depiction of size, and vice versa due mainly to dimension distortion.

Meaning: The world ain't flat [take that old world cartographers]. The world isn't depicted well on a 2D map, because it realistically isn't 2D.
No offense old world cartographers :X

Dat Australia. So big.

PS: Historical map == most likely conformal. :P
