Windows 8 seems to want to occasionally move me over to my e-mail to show me that I have mail.

Except I don't have mail. It will open it, but nothing new will be there. Hell, it will pull me right out of a game to show me.

Also, my mom wants me to wipe my old laptop and give it to her. Why would she need a laptop?

A while ago during the Dare Devil and the whole Santa Claus thing I was actually pretty pissed that they changed the White character into a black one.

In Dare Devil's case it was because I felt like it might be a bit racist, that they changed the race because a "Big black guy" would be more scary (rather then, that actor just being the most intimidating actor they could find who could also carry himself with poise).

In Santa Claus' case I felt like they were changing it for the sake of changing it... and that annoyed me because it is just pointless pandering.
-Oddly enough "Recess" also had an episode that changed Santa's race to black but I didn't mind that... MOSTLY because it didn't feel pointless, he was just black.

Then later on I heard of a movie that made a Black Character (Shana from Jem) into a not Black Character (though apparently the actress is "part black" so to speak) and I didn't care and said that the character is still the same character and her race wasn't important.

I think I really need to rethink my system of values. While I could easily just say that all these situations are different and would be right, the fact is that I didn't put a lot of thinking into them...

Being a good person is actually important to me.

Actually, I get pretty upset when they do change an already established character 'for the sake of diversity'.  Its the equivalent of  pandering to your audience, and it sends a message that diversity is a must (as in its utterly required and monotonous things cannot exist or be good/healthy).

When you are changing the character for reasons completely unrelated to plot/character development, its never a good thing.  Which is why a lot of new remakes upset me.

There is nothing wrong with diversifying the cast. The show that did this better then most was Spectacular Spiderman who took the WHITEST COMIC BOOK CAST EVER!!! and actually added characters who weren't white and actually gave them some importance.

The problem when they change a established characters race to another for seemingly no reason is because they make you feel like they have no respect for the character and are making changes for political reasons rather then because it is for better stories.

I understand the need for strong iconic role models in the case of making Captain America Black or making Thor a Woman (Sort of... and honestly... lets wait to see how long that lasts), ignoring that I think they are just doing it for publicity. I hate to use this term but it is essentially "forcing diversity", instead of making non-white male characters good in their own right... They change an already good character into another race for the sake of having that character be another race and nothing else, it just feels unearned and unjustified.

Oddly enough once again... Spiderman did it better... Ultimate Spiderman when they changed his race... actually worked with him from the ground up and established him as a successor and gave him an entirely new story, personality, and even powers. Sure it is essentially "Black Spiderman", but it was earned, not slapped together because "We need more minority characters and maybe a bit of controversy"

Can this happen in reverse? Yeah, but I can't think of anything except Robocop.

Though my issue is more my knee jerk reactions then my ability to logic it out. Why would making someone white, for example, not raise a flag? Logically SURE because no one is making a character white because it makes white people look good, but I can think of reasons why it would be done ignorantly.

Remember when I said that I mixed pink lemonade and coffee and that it actually tasted okay? No? Good, because it would be weird if you did, but on a related note, has anyone here ever mixed hot chocolate and coffee? I don't know why I'm thinking about it all of a sudden, but it just sounds like it would either be really good or at the very least decent.

To me, it was as good as you're making it sound.  I do it sometimes, but usually if I want something in my coffee, I put in something that is made to go in.  Hot chocolate is like a back-up plan for when I run out of normal stuff.

Well... I don't think that is true. It is more that writers tend to write closer to home and most white people have a predominately white life and are often white themselves.

MIND YOU! there is a huge exception to that in what I like to call the "White person experiences something not white" genre like "The Last Samurai". When they add a white character because "White people can't handle not white people" it is clear pandering UNFORTUNATELY they are right... their lowest common denominator attitudes are actually pretty right in that respect for the most part.

You're comparing basing a new character off of previous ideas to altering an existing character in the name of popularity.  Popularity is even a bit of an improper term.

Its comparable to a retcon.  I really don't wish to get into serious debate but:

-These changes are made to 'increase equality' or to pay lip-service to tolerance.  Which in itself isn't a bad thing.
-Equality is idealized and more and more pitched as a natural state.
-To be equal, nobody should be given inherent preference.
-So in perfect world, we would disregard race/ethnicity/gender as a special reason to change a character.  Its not that the reasons for wanting to change the characters are 'bad' or 'wrong', but that to reflect the ideal of equality, we should be ignoring the race/ethnicity/gender/religion/etc altogether unless there is a specific in-story reason to.

We all end up with different interpretations and ideas behind a story, but by holding these values above all others leads to their exploitation (i.e. Hollywood for $, claims of race-baiting, etc.) and serves to push against our ideal state.

Maybe its just me being philosophical . . .

Anywho, I take this as another reason to determine gender, race, &c. of characters by rolling dice and flipping coins.

It doesn't make for interesting listening asking people to describe the physical appearance of characters from a book which doesn't do much in the way of that itself.
