Apparently the basis for 'modern art' came from when a person set a public standing up toilet seat with his name penned in on it and put it up in an art gallery, no need to say that it was soon taken down, but some complete assholes decided that it was abstract art and it was supposed to be bad or some stupid stuff, and here we are today, with so many people just coasting off a standing up toilet seat.

Nah, that's a bad definition for modernism. The guy who did that was influenced / involved in the Dada movement, which was more or less the predecessor to surrealism.

Wow, that's actually pretty interesting, though I'm assuming the term anti-art was just referring to the current style of art at that time, otherwise it would have been pretty ironic.
That's my thing learnt for the day anyway.

Dada and surrealism are *part* of modern art, but not the whole thing. it's more in line with Picasso.

Reminds me of the time I went to the Tate and saw two pieces on a very similar topic. One was on the plight of the Philippinos in a vague nondescript time period and was supposed to be illustrated by some toilet roll with slashes in it (appropriately its only use was wiping your arse with it) whilst another was showing the plight of the Vietnamese in the Vietnam war and showed some manly Americans with their skin removed showing the muscle beneath about to open fire on some absolutely terrified villagers - all on a gigantic 12 metre long canvas. Why the former deserves any spot with the latter I do not know.

Fun fact: The art school that rejected Hitler accepted someone who painted a copy of the Mona Lisa. In their own feces.
