They were my favourite books until I was like, 12. They got me into reading.

When Harry Potter came out I was already reading novels, including a lot of westerns, with their insightful descriptions of improbably buxom, stunning looking women who somehow happened to be living on poor-as-shit tiny homesteads in the middle of nowhere, waiting to throw themselves at the first steely-eyed gunslinger to wander by and offhandedly save their family from bandits.
I was into more intellectual stuff, what can I say?

That was kind of not-serious.
I read (pronounced 'red') plenty of stuff other than stupid western novels, too. (And I'm not saying all westerns are stupid like that- some of my favourite books have been westerns. Just not dumb ones with one-dimensional characters like I described above. My kid-self quickly grew to dislike those.) Can't remember all that much of the other things I read, but there was plenty of fantasy.
I'm pretty sure I read a book from what is now my favourite fantasy series around then. And I read Raymond Feist's stuff, which was good for a while.

This is reminding me, I need to start reading the next book for the Bay 12 Book Club.

People got their panties in a twist because Cho Chang from Harry Potter was Asian in the film.

My god, a person with such a typical Chinese/Korean name can't be Asian!

Apparently they've tried justifying their views by doing logical loop de loops. One of the most used ones is that Cho Chang is clearly British and was adopted by Chinese people and given a Chinese name. Not like there can be Chinese immigrants in Britain at all.

What website was this? With the level of fannishness and the level of stupidity I would normally guess Tumblr, but Tumblr fans spend so much time fantasizing about turning white characters into "PoCs" that their ethics include [ETHIC:MAKE_POC_WHITE:UNTHINKABLE].

Eragon?

Not sure if you're into that kind of stuff. If you read that and like it, just keep in mind that the series declined. I liked all of it, but Eragon was brilliant and it slid down towards 'Eh, good enough'

You know, I quite liked the first Eragon book. I can't remember much of it now, but it was entertaining enough.
Not exactly one of my favourites- I think at some point in the second book it started pissing me off, not sure why though. Never got around to reading the last one or two books in the series.

No, but I've heard good things about it. Not sure what I'd think of the setting, but maybe I'll check it out.

The Dark Tower series took a massive nosedive in quality in the later (late five through mid seven) books, primarily because the later ones feel a lot like King became convinced he wouldn't finish the series before he died unless he got the lead out, and so he started pushing too hard.

Speaking of books, I must recommend the book "Jasper Dash and the Flame Pits of Delaware." You know how sometimes, books that are supposed to take place in real places end up being so inaccurate that it seems as if the author did literally no research? This book is a parody of books like those.

I loved the first Harry potter book, and I'm never reading it again because the first time I read it was magical and I don't want to ruin my nostalgia by finding that it's awful.
