Making a "next-gen" console that is less powerful than it's predecessor makes no sense.
They're expensive because they're new, mostly.
And yet they're not powerful enough. Since devs are already complaining about it.

Probably because the hardware hasn't got as much cheaper/better (depending on which way you're looking at it).

I wouldn't have minded if there was a console that played all games from every generation.

Bu that would be a bit too tough.

What about a console that can play games from all the previous gens, but not the current one?

IE a PC?

It seems as if graphics are entering a 'diminishing returns' sort of phase. I mean there was a massive difference from the point polygonal blocks of yore to the smoothness of yesteryear, but there's only so photorealistic a game could get before it breaches the fifth dimension

The push for graphics has definitely softened over the last few years, but I wonder if the shift to VR with the coming of the Oculus Rift may revitalize it.  I imagine being immersed in that fashion will make poor graphics much more obvious, and even disorienting.

I actually at one point wondered if you could make a game with better graphics then real life. Apparently game developers are obsessed with seeing if you can or something.

A PC. There you go.

I'm not even sure what that means. There are no places where reality compresses away detail. There is nothing to improve upon.

You can do that (sorta) if you start messing with eyes and ocular perception. Though this would have some far-reaching consequences...

You don't have to uncompress hidden detail, you just have to ADD DETAIL THAT WASN'T THERE BEFORE.
Never say you can't improve something. You always can. Perfection is only perfect until it gets its ass handed to it by someone who dared to be more then perfect.

You're assuming that reality is the apex of graphic goodness.
That's almost as bad as the people who think that humanity is the ultimate goal of evolution.

I have now lost track of how many times I've been made into a playable character/NPC/Assassination target in someone's game without my prior knowledge.

And about half of those has been GUNIN's fault.
