In my last long-running fort, I relied on them heavily for trading.

They are a good source of wood and wild beasties.  Wood is more common now and wild beasties were more variety than anything, so I never saw the point of pissing them off.  Little to use, little to gain, so it fell within the realm of too lazy to be assed to me.

Of course I also play as scaly winged lizards with a learning disability in everything that doesn't involve killing things, so I'm not sure I would be expected to follow the dwarf rules of elf killing anyway.

I believe in eequal mugging: elves, humans, and dwarves alike. I wonder if that has something to do with my forts' short lifespans...

I will say this: being able to see the dye in your dwarve's clothing makes elves seem more useful.
