I'm in this group. It's a necessary evil, but unfortunately we have a real inflation rate that is out of hand and is hurting everyone. Inflation is downplayed, arguably suppressed by using odd methods to calculate it now. as opposed to the one that actually matters in my opinion:



Yet here's the number they tend to report as *real* [nudge, nudge] inflation. How odd. Especially how it's always lower than the [already damn low] CPI now.

Basically, they put higher weight on the items which are increasing at lower rates, keeping the rates of change low because averages.

Why?
“…the net effect was to reduce reported CPI on an annual, or year-over-year basis, by 2.7% from what it would have been based on the traditional weighting methodology. The results have been dramatic. The compounding effect since the early-1990s has reduced annual cost of living adjustments in social security by more than a third.”
To make it cheaper to pay for things that are based on inflation.
