OK, you know how nowadays even trashy FPSs have first person trickery, for example the CoD games having you experience your character's murder from their own perspective?

Well, Half Life invented that.  It was revolutionary in that respect.  You were this fairly average joe character caught in the middle of this terrible situation, and you were glued to his perspective.  All you knew was what he was told, the interface was entirely things that Freeman literally saw, and the character himself was much more relatable.  All he had was his hazard suit, the soldiers trying to kill him were actually a lot more badass than him.

Compare to that doom.  The interface is awkward and makes no in-universe sense (you literally see your characters face on the screen at all times), there are no characters except demons you have to fight, and your character is this generic action movie badass.

Also, half life levels have a very high density of stuff.  You can't throw a crowbar without hitting some new game mechanic or death trap.  The first game is especially good about this, the second game is a little worse because of the extended driving segments but makes up for it by having probably the single most fun level I have ever played in a single player FPS.

Resources, maybe? There were a dozen at most HEV suits ever encounter in Black Mesa, while the combine you fight in the game are in truth more of an police force than a military. The 7-hour war was won by the combine organic robot things rather than infantry. Considering they occupy earth to drain the minerals and water, it's not surprising that they put as little into each soldier as possible.

I consider Gordon to be like bacterially resistant bacteria. The Combine messed up by letting him get accustomed to the relatively weak and stupid aliens, so that when he was called in to deal with the Combine occupation he was far more competent than he would have been with only his theoretical physicist combat training.

I can see how you may like it, but I'm not shelling out the money just to play it right now. I wasn't into shooters that much till I was in my teens and that's when CoD originally came out. I did like the story (somewhat of a WW2 history buff and all around current century military history interest) and I thought the game was better than Turok 2, which was my first fps and I have never won it yet without cheating and getting into the final boss chamber. At this point, I'm really just tired of most fps'es since THEY ARE THE EXACTLY THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN WITH DIFFERENT ENEMIES. That's why DF interested me so much is the fact I can build a world instead of just running in one. I cant wait to the new update tho.

But yeah I agree with you, I'm kind of burnt out on FPSs.  So many, so little difference.
