I just heard a Rogue Legacy dev call Rogue Legacy a "Roguelike".

Is everything a Roguelike? If that game's a Roguelike, then Zelda 2 and Guacamelee and Dwarf Fortress are Roguelikes.

Yes, the term seems to be degenerating quite quickly. Nowadays, it means little more than: "dying is part of the gameplay".

Single player character.
Randomly generated levels.
Perma-death.

As far as I'm concerned, those are the only things needed to be considered a roguelike. Zelda 2 and Guacamelee have neither of the last two criteria and thus don't count.
And since when is DF (adventurer mode, at least) not considered a roguelike?

Adventurer mode doesn't have perma-death in the same vein as, say, Rogue or Nethack; the world sticks around and doesn't change and you can revisit locations that your dead adventurers found and take their stuff.

But can't you find your previous adventurers and their stuff in Nethack? Isn't that what the "bones" files are for?
Dunno about Rogue, never played it.

Yes, but the world (the dungeon, that is) is regenerated every time; you cannot revisit the same dungeon.

Oh gods. The "What's a Roguelike" thing. Again. Again again. Again again again again.

The definition has expanded. It will likely expand more. It will never reach omnidefinitional -- applicable to anything -- to any meaningful degree. Suck it up. More investigations into the central themes and methodologies of the overarching roguelike genre is a good thing. Let it be good. Embrace the change. Enjoy the new roguelikes.

... nethack has portions of the dungeon that are more or less the same, every time. Being able to revisit a dungeon and have it be the same hasn't been a problem since people started screwing with persistent levels (which was at least as far back as Angband.). Cross-character persistence isn't very common but it's not exactly a meaningful thematic shift. There's been other roguelikes that had the same feature, iirc.

I was under the impression that adventure mode was a roguelike, and Fortress Mode was some sort of roguelike/4x hybrid thing.

Isn't Adventure mode a Roguelike? :-X
