Today, my computer has taken up the habit of not loading the desktop. It gets to where the desktop should be, but it's just a solid black background, no icons, and no start menu. Another unrelated window pops up like it normally does, but the desktop itself is just not there. I can ctrl+alt+del and restart, then everything comes back. After some searching, I still haven't the slightest idea why this is happening. It's becoming concerning. I really can't afford a new computer. Anyone else had a similar problem? I'm running windows 7.

Certainly a software issue, so a new computer is absolutely unnecessary.

Your last resort would be a reformat, which isn't the end of the world.

explorer.exe is not loading on startup, perhaps?

EVERY single time I compete in a cyber defense competition I somehow manage to kill explore.exe on startup.  I can't tell you how to fix it permanently, but to get it working go to task manager, click on show all processes, and then start explore.exe from there.   

You could put a .bat file in the Startup folder that says "start explorer.exe". I'm 90% sure that would work.

I believe Explorer is what runs items in the startup folder, catch-22

Oh, and as an unrelated WTF/rage: A few days ago I posted about the guy who showed up on campus with a gun, walked around the dorms for a bit, and drove off. There was actually an arrest made for that, but for the full story they were looking for a 5'6" white male. The guy the police detained (but eventually released) was a 6'11" black male. =.=

I make myself a cup of tea, forget about it, make another one, drink the new one, and then drink the old, cold one.
It's pretty much a habit now.

I've seen people frantically search themselves for their phone while talking on it. It's even happened to me a few times.

I've also seen people freak out in a line-up at a store because they couldn't find their wallet halfway through paying.
