Also, re: autism, there are probably cases where the person concerned might consider it something they'd like to be rid of, but there are so many people who consider it a defining trial of their lives, and moreover so many people who don't consider it a trial at all and just part of who they are, that I'm uncomfortable making most blanket statements about it at all. This is intensified pretty significantly by the whole spectrum thing. I'm okay with saying that there are categories of behaviors and modes of thought that can be called autistic, but that seems to be about as far as I can go on this one. For the moment, I'm more inclined to accept a person's own concept of their identity.

The thing is, it's not just the autist's (is 'autist' a word?) decision. What about their parents? If the autist is young, or is severely low-functioning, then it should be their parents' decision.
