I think those are actually supposed to be bombs or incendiaries. In which case this is basically a medieval form of the whole "bat bomb" idea.

On a side note, didn't the USA use fire bats to burn down Japanese houses. Quite a simple scheme really. Grab bats, bind bombs to them and then drop them on Japan at dawn. The bats will immediately look for shelter, most likely end up in the Japanese houses, which happened to be made of combustible materials.

There was experiments. They got canceled. Because the bats escaped. With the bombs still attached to them. I think they started hanging out in a water tower at the base they were being tested and they had a heck of a time retrieving them or something.

The way the story went (I think) was that they froze the bats in ice cube trays (really) until they were to be dropped over Japan. the problem was that the bats did not fully come out of hibernation during the test session. Most died on impact. The few that survived set fire to several hangers and a general's car.

... huh. Is that a new advertising tactic in your area or somethin'? S'been bog standard in these parts for... probably over a decade, now.
