I know there are people out there (clearly) who would disagree, but what is good about this fascination with adding everything to high school? Why is high school worthwhile to talk about? It would be like "ok it's a normal IT company - except everyone is a superhero!" or "it's a regular hotel - except everyone is a supernatural monster!"
I get that high school is a time of prodigious discovery about the self and a foundry for personalities, but it gets old. Recently came across a Netflix thing where it's a normal high school but everyone's a vampire. WTF? Then we have that forum game about dating girls who attend a high school for the disabled.
So we've got a setting everyone can relate to, where there are weird pressures and people can get away with casual violence and intimidation and forming ridiculous cliques without consequences, and everyone has to be there so it's like prison. Why haven't we seen a prison drama - except everyone is a Frankenstein's Monster?
It is because nothing replaces a highschool in terms of the elements one can bring forth from it. (I don't think a business is going to have a football club for example)
A setting where people are learning about themselves, others, and their abilities as well. Not to mention highschool really is just one big test for characters and abilities. As well strength of character actually means something with younger protagonists versus adults who are not expected to have character.
I DO hate the "stereotypical highschool" setting and many highschool plots. So Yeah I understand why you hate it, and frankly if I thought it would be like how you are envisioning it... I'd hate it too. They are so busy trying to fulfill the nonsense highschool tropes that have LONG since been retired in real life rather then trying to work with the setting.
It is why I added the "good" to it. Since I already seen the "Monster highschool" show of horrificness... the "musical highschool" of suckyness... and the "fashion highschool" of OHH MY GAWD what are they thinking? (though it had ONE episode I loved... and coincidently it BARELY involved our heroes)
