Doesn't Google already have automated cars?

Seriously? That guy believes we'll get completely autonomous cars in eight years? People have made the same predictions in the 1980s, and we really haven't advanced that much in the autonomous cars direction since the 1980s.

Um, the last 4 years or so has been a rather huge leap forward in terms of self-driving cars.


I think we'll get commercial self driving cars in 10 years or less. We won't kick humans out of the driver's seat completely for another generation or two though.

The article isn't even about Google.  It's about Tesla, which has no autonomous car technology right now.  And we won't have utopia because of them either.

Yes. Ones that only work on very specific tracks that some people are going 'nonononononono STAHP, you're GOING TOO FAST. We have statistics to prove it! (no, not stats about automated cars at this speed. Stats about human cars that are totally relevant and not just because we don't like the idea of robot cars') about last I'd heard, where 'too fast' was less than 20mph.

I could see cargo ships, because (1) they already have a very small crew now compared to the size of the ship, (2) there's less to hit and more space at sea, (3) planes already do an autopilot thing and ships should be similar, and (4) who cares about cargo ships crashing I mean seriously does it mean you have to wait another couple weeks for your shitty Reeboks?

Yes, the reason why some ships, planes, and spacecraft have auto-pilot features is that they don't have a lot of things to collide into.   

Still, the article is from Morgan Stanley saying that Tesla, which does not have any autonomous car technology, is going to bring about Utopia in about a decade.

On autonomous cars there's actually a lot of real development going into semi-autonomous cars already (i.e. require the driver to still hold the wheel, but do most of the driving themselves). A couple of car companies have already started doing highway tests, and from the looks of it currently Volvo is planning on doing a joint project with the Swedish government that should result in 100 autonomous cars driving their roads by 2017.

Pop Mech has been running articles about autonomous cars since like 1902.

Course the difference is that now there are actual working prototypes doing tests on normal streets and highways that are still serving their function at the time (as opposed to being blocked off specifically for the test). Still not saying that it's gonna happen too soon, but it's certainly a big step from "only works on our specialized tracks and only if our car is the only type of car on the road".

The one thing I'm not sure self-driving cars will accomplish anytime soon is defensive driving. Sure, they can obey all the rules of the road just fine, but can they deal with a car swerving in front of them? Honest question.
