You know, I've -heard- of things like this.

But I never really expected to see one outside of film and stories. :I

"Faith is the most dynamic force in the world today."

Faith is conservative. It's not about change. Dynamism is all about change. It would be more accurate to say that charity, or the desire for peace, or education, are dynamic forces (which coincidentally can be readily accomplished sans faith).

Secondly, I'd argue that there are many forces that create far more change in the world than those things, such as solar radiation. Then again, we generally have faith in the sun, so my point about things being a component of faith rather than faith itself still stands.

It isn't a dig on religion. It's a dig on vapid sayings that don't actually say anything.

Yep. Dude's offering scholarships for people to write pretty little essays about his vapid sayings.

Hilarious :P

*is reminded of a Science Friday he heard about 8 years ago.

This woman called the Science Friday show on NPR, and started spewing drivel about "love being the strongest force in the universe", to which my friend and I started dieing of laughter.

I joked that black holes must *REALLY LOVE* all those stars and planets that they crush into themselves, never to be seen again.

This has created a kind of inside joke about "black hole love" .

Bought some chips a few minutes ago. Got home, spent a few seconds trying to open it the normal way, y'know, pulling the top open and all that. Couldn't, using an appropriate amount of force. Wondered why, prodded the bag a bit. Actually looked at it (instead of just the price on it).

It. The potato chips. They're resealable. Got that, y'know. Built in ziplock thing you see on stuff like buggeroff huge bags of cereal. Just.

What? Has doing the little curl-the-top-and-put-something-heavy-on-it-to-keep-bag-shut thing become, I'unno, too much effort? Who thought this was a good idea? It has to be costing a few more cent per bag! And for... for what? Who actually wanted this? Who thought it was a good idea? Why would you do this, chip makers? WHY!?

Still the cheapest per ounce of the sort of chip I wanted, but... still. I'mma' do the curl-thingy just to spite the buggers.

I've lived with people too stupid or lazy to bother sealing chip bags after eating some. Which is just depressing. And disgusting.

Plus convenience can be quite marketable, depending on how you spin it. Though I'm guessing they are leaning more towards "the ziplock keeps it much fresher than using chip-clips" or whatever.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Speaking as a fat bastard, what sort of jerk opens a bag of crisps/chips then does not eat them all, regardless of bag size?

The rub here is that it's an off brand. There's no spin -- this is one of the ones that never get actually advertised beyond word of mouth, and only get bought because they're less expensive than the name brands.

... though actually turning on the lights and looking at it again, it does say "resealable for freshness", so I guess that is the angle they're going for. Still...

In my experience?

Teenagers, young children, and stoners.

I've seen horrific messes left behind by all of them. Ever see a utensil so overgrown with mold that it can be mistaken for a houseplant?

Maybe if you're buying so much food that you need to vacuum-seal it to keep it fresh you should buy less food.

... nah. There's pretty good reasons to be buying in such quantities to need to go out of your way to preserve some of it in order to be able to eat it all. Buying in bulk and all that, which is almost always the most economical way to shop for certain things. The more you get in one go, the less transportation et al costs per item, as well. Cost savings all around, so long as the preservation efforts don't cost more than the savings. And it usually doesn't, from what I've seen.

I can't eat an entire bag of chips in one sitting. Sometimes not even two sittings.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
