In Belgium we currently have some significant trouble with war re-enactor groups having significant trouble in getting their weaponry into the country.

While I understand gun control, the general purpose knife bans have always seemed way over the edge to me. Knives are useful tools, and I have never regretted having one on me. I suspect its a cultural difference, and laws like that only really get traction among certain populations that wouldn't have the first idea of what to do with a knife if they posessed  one.

look at the bastards abusing things to the point at which we have to ban them because nothing else will really stop them as long as they have access

i mean sure it's bad pr to ban people but it's better off for everyone in the long run

Amongst others, yes. Any firearm really. In fact, it's more of a hassle than getting a normal, modern day gun into the country, as most old weaponry doesn't reach several modern day safety requirements.

Do you guys remember the cinema shooting during TDKR? The crazy guy in question pick the one cinema in the area that didn't allow carrying. If anything, I would want to carry my gun more after that.

And on the subject of knives, my state (Kansas) passed the Kansas Comprehensive Knife Rights act in July 2013, which allows possession and carrying of switchblades, butterfly knives, dirks, stilettos, and other formerly-banned knives. I am going to be acquiring a butterfly knife shortly, but as a Boy Scout I really don't need a switchblade, as I've practiced to the point where I can draw and open a Swiss Army knife in less than a second.

Well, the thing is this: since guns are very difficult to get, knives are the weapon of choice in violent crime. So any crackdown on violent crime, especially among youths, usually includes restrictions on knives. (Butterfly knives for example are now completely illegal in Germany.)
Then of course the percentage of people who actually need knives as tools on a regular basis should be quite a bit lower in most of Europe than in the US, we don't have that much wilderness left.
Also there are plenty of exceptions for knives that are tools and everybody can easily buy a pocket knife. You're just more restricted on what you can carry around in public and what you have to keep in a tool box.
