From what i've seen the main use of the site is cybering.

Well, the site doesn't like people using it for cybering so now people use it to meet other people to cyber elsewhere. Omegle is like a seedy club that had too many problems with people banging in the bathrooms so they put bouncers in front of the bathrooms and expected that would stop people banging altogether. People are still going to bang, they'll just find somewhere else to do it.

Well, SMF is probably less taxing. The school webpage probably has a slideshow of smiling students and teachers and basic fluff, like animations, drop down menus and flashing colors, while an SMF is just text with some formatting.
