There are rather a lot of students in our universities from elsewhere in the UK though. St. Andrews is practically 70% English, 10% Canadian and 9% American, 1% Scottish. We would lose a lot of money if we suddenly let you get your education here for free too.

Yeah we would but you can hardly call it unjustified complaining though, it is specifically targeting English and Welsh people out of everyone in the EU.

The Welsh assembly government actually subsidises uni fees for anyone studying outside of Wales eslewhere within the UK... IIRC the maximum a Welsh uni can charge a student living in Wales is £3k a year, so if a student heads off to St Andrews, Oxford or wherever, the £6k difference comes from the WAG budget.

I didn't know that, thank you for telling me

I thought that at first, but my stomach isn't upset and I'm not coughing or stuffy. I've never had a cold without at least one of those symptoms, at least.

I know I'm late on this, but the flu has nothing to do with upset stomachs. That's norovirus, an unrelated virus. I cannot emphasize this enough. This confusion kills people.

... actually, it's not unusual for flu infections to be accompanied by G.I. symptoms.

Well, it is the English paying for it, after all.
Nah, the Scottish have money streaming from their orifices. They have a massive oil industry.

That is an image I could greatly do without.

I like showers. I turn the water up to a temperature where it's almost scalding, and then kind of space out. If anything is good at making someone feel relaxed it's extreme amounts of heat.
That is the issue that I have been discussing. At the moment, I can't space out. I'm locked-in. I get the feeling I'm staying that way until I sleep again.
Have you tried cold showers? Not ice-cold, but a little colder than lukewarm. In moderation, they're great, especially following a hot shower.

Cold showers are the most horrible thing ever unless I'm coming back from running, and that's just because of the perception shift.

Anyway, I fell asleep. The schedule being unfixed is annoying, but at least I can properly cognate again.

That's what I'm telling you - hot shower, then medium cold. Hot shower for the 'just did some exercise' feeling, to get sweaty - it doesn't need to be long. And the cold shower for that refreshing, sharpening feel.
Damn, I need to take more cold showers.

Not the same. I have to actually exercise to be in that mindset.

So I've started seeing tiny black objects scurrying around the corners of my vision now. I'm no expert, but madness cometh.

That's a sign that you're touching the male half of the One Power too much. You should probably stop that, side effects include madness, incineration of family members and yourself using pure energy beyond your control, and harems. [/fantasyreference]

In other news, I need to get back to reading Wheel of Time some time. I actually had a hard time recalling enough to make that reference.

Bzzt. You clearly do, the saa are a manifestation of the corruption brought on by using the True Power, not from overusing saidin. The taint on the latter just causes good old fashioned insanity mixed with physical degradation.  :P

If you finished the 3rd book, you really don't need to. It goes downhill from there.

How far did you read it? There were some pretty bad volumes, but some of the later ones were good as well. That said, 3 does make for an excellent end-point if you want to pretend that it was a trilogy and not a painfully long series about describing dresses and repeating the "personality" section of everyones' character sheets every few chapters with a little politics and magic on the side that eventually got back to the whole "stopping the amorphous personification of evil" shtick.

And if nothing else you've got to admit that Jordan managed to make a religion without a god or a church.  :P

I got through book 10. The straw that broke the camel's back that made me quit after that book is that, as far as I could tell, it didn't have a climax. I was just slogging my way through it and it suddenly ended.

I've heard that complaint way more often than I should, given that I haven't even looked for anything regarding that series whatsoever in my entire life.
