Bolded for emphasis. I'm talking about dealers who have the basic sense to not use their own product--that is to say, the ones that treat it like a business. If you're selling and using, you're an addict first and a dealer second. That really shouldn't have needed clarification; if he meant "drug addict", he would/should have said it, because there's a big damned difference. :|

Sorry, I meant drug cartel members, i.e. gangsters devoted to trafficking drugs, not individual dealers. My mistake.

Got a wierd and annoying problem with an aftermarket Xbox 360 controller on my PC. It has an inversion switch on the back (for the right stick). If It is on, then UP on the right stick does nothing. If I turn it off, DOWN on the right stick does nothing. Quite annoying.
These things happen. Keep your chin up. Shouldn't be hard.

Oh, that's also different.  :P

But mostly because the cartels branch out into things like kidnapping.

I know what you meant by drug dealer, but the fact is that the VAST majority of dealers are users also. Usually it's the big wholesalers that don't use. The businessmen, not the chump change selling pot in the dorm. In that case, yes. They're going to be very rational, and probably quite reasonable. They have people to go after you, they don't dirty their own hands.

The bottom line is...
DRUGS ARE BAD.

Because they're illegal.

This. Things aren't good or bad, regardless of the normative connotations people attach to them. Value judgements are based on how we use them.

... I'd disagree. Anything that overtly screws with your ability to, y'know, do things (think, see, feel, etc.), isn't something you can call good, under any circumstance. At best (as in opiates and whatnot) they might be better than a worse alternative (pain, et al), necessary for survival, or maybe amusing (but gods know I've never heard of one that sounded anything resembling that, for me) but a direct detriment est, pretty much regardless. And recreational drugs kinda' are. Temporarily, with the best of them, but others less so.

S'bad stuff some people use as entertainment or medical assistance of some sort. There's a lot of stuff like that. Personally, so long as it doesn't extend to harming people around them, I don't really consider it worth censure, m'self, but... yeah. Some things are bad (directly and overtly harmful/disruptive to the system they're introduced to). Maybe able to be used to stop worse things, but...

I'd need "do things" to be better defined, really. Loud music makes it harder to pick up on audio cues about your environment, but I wouldn't say it's an objectively bad thing. Altering your state of consciousness can make it harder to do some things, but the experience can potentially be worthwhile. Do you need to weigh the risks of side-effects, especially long-term, and ensure that you're using drugs in an environment that's more or less appropriate? Yes, absolutely. You don't do civil engineering or security work while you're stoned out of your gourd, but I wouldn't expect you to be a good hunter while you're blasting dubstep at ear-rupturing volumes either.

EDIT: For clarity, I'm not arguing from experience so much as from empathy with arguments I have heard from people who have. The closest thing I've used to a recreational drug is daily piracetam. I'm far too timid to get into the local drug culture, and the research on side-effects I've done has convinced me that the ones I've looked into are not worth it, but that's my response.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Would your boss allow you to go to work drunk?  No.  What about high?  No.
Should you drive while drunk?  No.  What about while you are high?  No.
Should you be handling heavy equipment or dangerous tools while drunk?  No.  What about while you are high?  No.

I dunno man... seems party hard to figure out the appropriate time to light it up... a little help please?

I tried quitting caffeine, couldn't program for shit anymore. And did you just say "party hard"? Maybe shouldn't post when drunk :D

Pro-drug-use: I think everyone in the whole world should try mushrooms at least once.

I prefer not having my mental capabilities messed with by substances that I am not familiar with and don't know how they work.  Strongest stuff I'll take is caffeine, I won't even take aspirin unless it is absolutely necessary.

I once had a doctor get on my case when I had an ear infection for not taking all of my antibiotics I was prescribed.  (Ear infection still went away though)

I don't see that this is something to brag about. If the bugs in your ear hadn't all died, you just helped create a potentially antibiotic-resistant superbug.

You really should take the full treatment if you take antibiotics. Not for your sake, but so we don't have antibiotic resistant strains running around.
