While that IS interesting, I would be surprised if that hadn't been errata'd away at some point, as that would have been written before some pretty major late 3.5 changes such as swift actions. If I had a copy of the Rules Compendium, I'd check there. Unfortunately, I don't

It's possible that the Arkenstone was somehow connected with the Ring, as the clan that settled the Lonely Mountain had one of the Seven. Since Bilbo had the One at the time, there may have been a reaction.

Alternatively, the Arkenstone is sentient, but not evil. I'd suspect that a sentient gem would rather be owned by the dwarves (who love it particularly) than a dragon (for whom it is simply part of the hoarde.) Thus, making the first non-dragon that came near pick it up.

My final conclusion on the subject was actually that the Arkenstone wanted to return to beneath the Mountain (it is called the "Heart of the Mountain", after all), on the basis that the only interaction with it where nobody acts crazy is when it is placed in Thorin's tomb...underneath the mountain.

I'd still say it was evil based on the whole mind control aspect, though.

All week, for some reason, passing by an airfield which had an old bomber parked in it, my boss and I had a bit of a discussion, and the movie Memphis Belle came up and it became a main topic for another couple days; basically, I was being told how good a movie it was, and how it hasn't aired in a good while for a classic. Naturally, I did my usual routine finding out about movies and such, nothing really special (basically, following through on the suggestion). I'm scanning through the guide for something to watch on the weekend after working all week, and lo and behold, Memphis Belle is airing on the Military Channel, and it JUST started.

I was equal parts puzzled and laughing. Usually, I get deja vus of such things (from movie lineups to pre-watching episodes of a show). This blind-sided me entirely.
