Yup.

Beyond all the body shaming, what the fuck is with all the morons complaining about having to pay for other people's healthcare through taxes? "omg now that x is covered under federal health benefits it's now your obligation to avoid having that problem to the absolute best of your ability so I can pay $0.02 less on my taxes!" I've seen that disgusting attitude many places.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

So how DOES an avatar fad start.. I mean, it's not enough just changing avatar and say "Look at this!".
Someone else copies the style, and then someone else does. 4 people is critical mass where the reaction is self-sustaining.
Well that requires timing.. Hmm..
Anyone have a formula.. or something..  of how an avatar fad starts?
That way we could predict when the next one happens.

Try Catastrophe theory.

And yet they never get in an uproar over the idea of public funds paying in lieu of poor, and now bankrupt, patients. Even though that's one of the main reasons that public costs in American health-care is about par per-capita for the developed world. On top of the private costs, which double it.

You'd think they'd go "Wait, I'm paying as much in taxes for healthcare as the Canadians? AND I HAVE TO PAY MY OWN WAY AS WELL? HAVE YOU SEEN HOW HIGH THESE BILLS ARE? RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!"

Seeing how brilliantly the American healthcare works, our tireless leaders in government here in Britain are seeking to emulate it by selling off as much public health as they possibly can, following the examples of the trains (now really expensive and bad), the electricity (now foreign owned, really expensive) and basically every public service of note.

Also another example of why both political brands are functionally identical.
Remember all those times when the Tories were hounding Labour for selling off nationalised services and gold and such?

Practically the only people that still want to keep the services are also called "Tartan Tories" by Labour.

You did.

And I rather liked the avatar fads.

And that reminds me, I need to change my avatar sometime soonish.
I ignore avatar fads. The only change I've made to mine in ~2 years is the angry eyebrows, to differentiate it from that of one "Barbarossa".

I want to keep them, and I am not a Scottish Nationalist.
I just want to throw money at the Green Party until they get enough power to influence politics properly.

Until then I will get my dose of politics by watching BBC parliament and laughing at old people having shouting matches in the House of Lords. A recent discussion on Gibraltar was particularly entertaining. They were all just ranting about how horrible Spain is. For over an hour.

also you must have been confused as hell during the penguin fad
Hey now, part of the point of the penguin fad was to make sure people were STILL recognizable from their avatars... despite being penguins. People didn't just do /random/ penguins, they were... penguinified.

So how DOES an avatar fad start.. I mean, it's not enough just changing avatar and say "Look at this!".
Having been involved in several, it works like this. Someone gets a new avatar (easier if triggered by an event) that other people think is pretty cool. This happened with Penguins, Ponies, Touhou, MSPaint Adventure, etc. Someone else responds by making a similar avatar for themselves and other people. Every avatar fad, at it's core, is driven by the avatar artists that frequent (or frequented) the board, and are generally already looking for an excuse. Even better than changing your own avatar is making avatars for a few other people (preferably those already active in the thread where it came about) in a similar style. If one or two them take it up, other people might start showing interest, and you've got a fad going. For the most recent penguin fad for example, I made a lot of avatars for people, but never made one for myself (although someone else eventually did) - I just volunteered to penguinify /other/ people.

And it all ends with the fad being incorporated into Ottofar's avvy.

There were lots of smaller fads though - weren't there, like, a bunch of "put a hat on it" fads of some sort?

Many of those go by unnoticed by everyone except the people participating, but leave you quite distinguishable.

There was a put-a-smile-on fad, a monochrome fad (still have both of those, I'm slowly building up this thing), a cyborg fad, mangaglasses, rotating... We should keep a list of these things.
