Quidditch seems a little less insane when you have access to powerful healing magic. At that point, it's no more risky than, say, high school football.
He might be talking about the "Catch the flying golden bug and you wipe out everything your team-mates have done."

Takes 15 goals to get one snitch, I doubt the point spread is that far apart, and from a purely spectator-oriented position, watching a dude on a broom look for something you can barely see can't be fun.

Get rid of the snitch, buy a clock, and maybe it'll be a good sport. As far as sports go.

(On the other hand, I don't like the magical world because nobody seems to give a damn to figure out why waving a pointy stick and saying some bullshit words can make you super-fucking-powerful. I can see why wizard-born people might not, but muggle-born? Seriously? Not one kid takes a look at all this and goes "Why?")

Was about to mention that. For those of you who aren't aware, HPMOR (Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality) is about a Potterverse in which, among other major changes, Petunia marries an Oxford Biochemist and Harry becomes a child prodigy, the kind  who tries to solve P=NP with a Time Turner. There are some major plot changes, as the HP plot with rational!Harry is resolved within 72 hours. ("My scar is burning? Let's try the Baconian experimental method to find out why!")

Read it. It's funny and serious at the same time. It kinda suffers from Cerberus syndrome.

The best way to understand The Wizard World is that it is a industrial society.

So the crazy nonsense rules with no breaks or stops in it (you play until you win) makes sense. Along with the heavy doses of racism, racial superiority, the lack of safety in the workplace, as well as the accepted abuse of children (sorta, it is a complex issue even back then) and the idea of danger as being "part of growing up"

Well just to make the game entirely pointless...

The winner of the series is the team to score the most points spread across all games.

Now remember that game that took months because no one found the snitch? Well it could have been the game between the two worst teams, and because of the built up scores... the winner of that game likely won the series.

I do believe today was the first time I actually encountered a strident climate change denier in person. Kinda' interesting. Shame it was in a business law class where further discussion on the subject (or, honestly, discussion that outed this person to begin with) was seriously out of place.

I liked the bit where they noted that a volcano puts out as much CO2 as a million cars, as justification for mankind having an effect on climate change being nonsensical.

E:Ooh, I checked the numbers. It seems there averages around 60 eruptions a year (60 million car equivalent) and there's over a billion cars on the road. Welp!

E2: This would also mean that the yearly motor vehicle output (going by 1 million vehicles/volcano) is currently roughly equivalent to 2/3rds the volcano output in the last ten thousand years, combined.

Folks, I'm not sure. But I think this volcano/car CO2 equivalence is reinforcing my belief in man influenced climate change.

I'd have fixed it to be man-influenced. Original wording, point is more clear.

Yeah, I realized that m'self a bit later. Too lazy now, but... eh.

Mostly I'm now just curious who/what organization is using that as a talking point. Man versus non-man CO2 emissions are something that's been pretty firmly established as falling in our dubious favor, in terms of overall quantity, apparently.

I don't keep up with this thread at all, I sometimes click on the New Posts button for this thread, which takes it a week or 3 back.(Over 20 pages ago on max post view...)  I want to make snarky comments on half the things that were talked about.

Edit: Oh, here is a nice contribution to the WTF...

PETA says Poultry and eggs causes small genitals for your male children.   You so crazy PETA.

Has anyone ever noticed how many episodes of all the versions of Startrek could have been entirely avoided if the crew were smart enough to request a copy of the planet's bylaws AND READ IT before going onto the planet in question?

Even Picard who is the epitome of a Starfleet Captain (outside the movies) falls into this.
