I'm not big on the fact that Japanese child pornography laws are some of the most lenient in the developed world. It's only been illegal to make and sell the stuff since 1999, possession is completely legal.

The whole sexualised little girls AKA biyojo/bishojo (if they're high school age or so) thing that's still pretty popular over there really gives me the willies. Not that that wasn't a feature of western culture at one time and still is to a certain extent, I'm just saying it's... all a bit creepy.

I do wonder though if child porn possession should be legal. Perhaps it should be, if pedophiles have something like that as a substitute then maybe they will be less likely to abuse a child. Someone may counter that they would just be indulging their fantasies, but what do you expect them to do? Repress it? That would be like asking a gay guy to stop being gay. What are you going to do, chemically castrate them? Like animals? There has to be a better way.

i'd like to say that we could go ahead with virtual reality so nobody gets physically harmed and the pedophiles are satisfied but that would certainly harm virtual reality as a viable thing for marketing to potential consumers and i don't really want to harm virtual reality. but then, people already say that every excess dollar spent on the us military is a dollar not spent genetically engineering catgirls for domestic ownership so grains of salt will be provided to you upon request

The problem would be in the production of it, and that's why it's illegal in the first place. If there's a market for it, they'll make more of it, and that only serves to do more kids psychological harm by exposing them to sexual elements they won't understand or have the independence to agree or disagree to. They have no autonomy, they cannot say no, and that's rape, and of a minor.

This. That's why virtual child pornography (aka 90% of the internet) is probably a better answer.
