Hugh Segal, a member of the Canadian Conservative party (the guys who have Stephen Fucking Harper as their leader) advocates for a basic income negative-tax.

Why a negative tax? Why not a guaranteed basic income?

~snip~

Before I reread the Canadian bit, I was wondering why a conservative was advocating a pseudo-socialist tax/welfare policy.

His idea is to make it more of a top-up to bring up anyone below the poverty-line. I don't know how it would work in regards to employment and income from working. I think it'd be graduated, so if you make 10k from working and the poverty line is 20k, then you get 25k in total (half of 10k is taken off the basic income of 20k)

If you're already making more than the poverty level, the thinking is that you don't need it.

This and this explain it better. The latter is written by Hugh himself.

What if you make exactly 20k? The borderline cases are always the problem with such schemes - which is why I'm in favor of even Bill Gates receeiving a government cheque each month. Cuts down on these problems.

I don't know, exactly. :P The goal is to keep people from starving while saving money in terms of bureaucracy :P And not scrutinizing people and treating them as inhuman cheats. I'm sure it'd be easy to just say "Hey, you a citizen? Here, have a check", but most of that money would be clawed back via tax.

We should just define these things with continuous functions. Borderlines? HAH.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Why give people money by virtue of existing? They didn't even choose to exist. If suicide is illegal, then you are basically forcing them to have money.

But how did you even get halfway there?
He's probably using the modern variant, optimalized for IT purposes. Ie, the Last 1% of the task will take 99% of the time.*

*As opposed to the opposite Quantum Download Theory(Popularized by the Windows Download Manager) which says that any action will be completed within now and the end of time, and the only way to find out how long it takes is by looking back when it's finished.
Eh, I always visualize Zeno as "get halfway there to your point, then go half the remaining distance, then half the remaining distance, then half the remaining distance..."

Ah, but say you go that half the remaining distance at the same speed as the first half. Why decelerate?
You still have to go half the distance from your new point of reference.

I'm actually not all that against Rudy Giuliani, though I disagree on almost all issues with the Republican party.

The whole Republican-Democrat thing doesn't seem to work anyway.  Some things I side with the general republican view, some things I side with the general democrat view.  That apparently makes me an independent, which is all and good.

But I am close friends with one person with a similar view as me that identifies as a republican, and I used to know another with the same views that called themselves a democrat.  It's a clusterfudge.

My dad was in the kitchen making food while listening to this earlier. I'm not sure why he was listening to that.
