I've found that the best metric to use is if a geometric symbol looks more like a swastika than the Golden Dawn logo, it's not alright, but if it doesn't, it's fine.

The swastika was originally a Native American symbol, which later came to be associated with the Nazis. It does not specifically represent Nazi fascism, and maybe your school based its symbol on the Native American version.

EDIT: on the subject of magical space exploration, I would say that it would maybe be easier to cheat by Planeshifting into the Ethereal or Astral planes, traveling a (shorter) distance along them, then Planeshifting back out.

Pretty much what was said before, but the symbol is not exactly the same (the name is the same though). There's 4 little rounds around it. And the branches can turned to the other side.
