Fucking D.B. Cooper. I've seen specials about him on TV. It's crazy to think that a man can hijack a plane, get 200,000 dollars, and parachute out, and on top of that over 40 years later and we still don't know who had the balls to do that.

It's the archetypal example of the fatal flaw of our criminology system. Random crime. We have almost no way to deal with it, and the only reason that is accepted is because it is relatively rare. Most people commit crimes against individuals they are somehow connected to. Committing a crime, even a huge crime, while working alone and unconnected to the target, can mean you have a very good chance of getting away with it.

I do love how the FBI insists he died. Denial, much?

Well, he is literally the only person to ever successfully get a ransom and get away with it in the entire history of US aircraft hijackings, so saying that this is a good example of a fatal flaw in our crimonology system seems a little odd considering how much of an anomaly it is.
I mean he only got away with it because he had pretty much every factor working with him, and you would find it next to impossible to pull the same stunt off today with all the beefed up security.

Also given the guy is probably about a hundred years old by now, if he ain't dead yet, he probably isn't far off.

The flaw is such that your odds of getting away with it are much higher than they normally are for that crime's standards.

How are they gonna know it was you? Without any "He was here!" proof like DNA or fingerprints (and even those, they need you on file already), or a gun casing to match to your gun or gun-type, all they'd have to go on would be any links to the victim. The random victim you chose in a random place in the country.

At BEST, they'll notice the unexplained absence you made, but those happen all the time and they have no way to pin any specific crime on you for it.

Same thing for theft, extortion, or other crime.

The only real reason this doesn't happen is that the vast majority of people, even criminals, are NOT violent sociopaths. It's also part of the reason it's hard to catch a serial killer. Often times, they target people they've never met before, and take breaks of months to years between kills, making it very difficult for the police to connect the crimes and form a picture of what is going on.
