I got someone saying that Graphics are equally as important as Gameplay.

I am not sure if I should put it here for being insane or in the Sad category for making me weep for mankind.

Graphics are not unimportant, graphics are important to a game.

How a game looks and how a game sounds is the lens at which you perceive the game.

Yet in the end they are only there to show the gameplay in the best possible light. They are proponents of the game and accents of the gameplay.

Putting them on equal ground is to inflate graphics as one of the two deciding points of a game's worth.

Ideally, graphics, gameplay, and story should not be in any kind of competition at all. Should the three aspects be intertwined harmoniously, the game will likely be excellent.

Mona Lisa is nowhere near as functional as the oils, pigments, frame, canvas, and time that went into it. Who cares about how something looks?

I'll generally agree that gameplay is far more important, but would The Walking Dead have been so profound if not for its artistic touches, Journey for its landscapes (and while I haven't played it, what is the gameplay, running around?), would Crysis even be a title if not for the graphics envelope it pushed?

Call me sad and insane, but there's an art to graphics and you can't ignore that.

If Bastion didn't have the charming hand-painted terrain and the voice-over, it wouldn't have been as impressive. o.O

It's not so much the graphics that are important, but the aesthetics. Graphics aren't supposed to be a goal on their own, but need to serve gameplay/the experience.

Nobody said the graphics aren't important. They certainly are. But they are not as important as gameplay.
A game with excellent gameplay and poor graphics is a good game. A game with excellent graphics and poor gameplay is a bad game (although that may be debatable). Of course having both good gameplay and good graphics is better, but that's not always the case.

There are a lot of odd things that are true about gaming.

For example there is more to a game's worth then how fun it is.

Ehn... I'd kinda' disagree, there. There just happens to be more than one sort of fun. Or, rather, multiple types of enjoyment. Any decent hedonist could tell you that

A game's worth is in how pleasurable it is. More or less flat out. There's just many sorts of distinct ways one can be pleased.

E: In actual WTFery, I do believe Megaman 10's Pumpman is the most innuendo laden Megaman boss I've seen in a while. Right up there with ZX Advent's giant plant robot schlong. Always makes me wonder how much they think about these things before pushing them out.

Though our disagreement I feel is mostly semantic based.
