it's interesting the sort of solutions a simple, but flexible AI will come up with. With something more complex, you'd basically have to explicitly program every single level routine into it. Sure, it's stable, but it doesn't grow.

I wondered why it did the fancy dodge of the pacman ghosts but then it hit me. 

The AI must have somehow figured out how the ghosts path and it did that so that the ghosts would continue on straight instead of moving north towards pacman.  I mean I don't know how the ghosts actually path but that seemed pretty darn effective and there has to be some reasoning behind why the AI did it.

Same thing with the AI while playing Mario repeatedly doing the understomp and walljump tricks.  Those seem too unusual for the AI just to be doing by accident.  I can't even reliably pull off an understomp when I intend to.

So, one of my friends said that his father is going to learn him to program. The father also apparently said that you only really need C++ and Java. When I asked my friend what language he was going to learn, he shrugged and said "Probably C++". I don't really see a 14 year old guy with no programming experience learning C++

C is pretty easy, as far as I remember - minimalist, you need to understand, not learn things.
And C++ is not that much of a step up from that, is it?

I wonder if the AI knew about the "safe spot" in that little corner, and jumping out in the middle of the ghosts was just it spazzing out like with mario jumping for nor reason (random routine, but it doesn't hurt anything).

Same here.  Whether or not that was a good thing is questionable, but it's definitely possible.  I think I was about 15 at the time, so that's not completely far fetched.

I learned some terrible ways to do things, but then that's probably standard for anyone learning to program and isn't specific to C++ or being young.
