I've been waking up due to extreme thirst every morning every once in a while lately. I decided to end this by drinking 700 ml of water before going to bed. Instead of waking up with extreme thirst this morning, I woke up with the extreme need to pee and a slightly less extreme thirst.

ah ah ah. That's funny. Try drinking the same amount 2 hours before going to bed , it should work. Perhaps it's because of your nose ? Some people have their nose not perfectly straigth, and therefore they open their mouth when sleeping because they can't breethe with it, hence the feeling of extreme thirst in the morning.
