When those maps first showed up here a little while back, it was the first time I realized that places OUTSIDE the Rhode Island area used the term as well. It blew my mind. I thought we were the only ones with bubblers just like we are the only ones with quahogs

I had no idea anyone outside of Wisconsin called them bubblers. Though I usually call them water/drinking fountains these days since I learned that bubblers don't actually bubble (ask kids, we all just took the name for granted and didn't really think about it until a teacher originally from out of state said something about it.)

Without looking it up, I think it was explained that it had something to do with some sort of (intentional) chemical reaction in a specific drinking design of drinking fountain that caused bubbles to rise from below. Or something like that.

Preedit: Yeah, looking it up, that teacher was full of shit (or maybe I just wasn't paying attention really well). The real reason it's called a bubbler is because, in 1889, a Wisconsin water fixtures company, Kohler Company, then called Kohler Water Works, created a fountain that shot straight up, instead of in an arc like they normally do. This created a bubbling texture at the apex of the spray, hence the name "Bubbler". So not as gross or weird as I thought, though probably still pretty unsanitary.

Also, Kohler Water Works apparently spread into other parts at the time, namely Portland, Oregon; Boston, Massachusetts; the aforementioned Rhode Island; and New South Wales.

I just can't read stuff that's past like three feet. Everything is just sort of blurry past that. This distance shrinks by like 4 inches per year.
