I've been looking into the documentation of our large appliances since we got a generator. I know my dad was in charge of buying them, both because he was (at the time) the dominant personality in my parents' relationship and because he was an HVAC salesman.
Every single appliance is in the bottom 10% for efficiency in it's category. The refrigerator takes the prize though, it's 4kWh away from being the top energy sucking model of it's size.

The question is, "do they have to check and see if anybody's in there before they compact the trash?" The answer here seems to have been "no they don't." I dunno. I could see a homeless person living in a dumpster.

It seems the judgement is only pertaining to checking for people who are hiding from police. If the guy was in there for some other reason(homeless, scavenging, etc) they might have found differently. Which seems kinda off as it implies that whether you have to make sure nobody's in there depends on the motives of the person who might be in there.

A man who was very possibly high and wanting to shoplift hid from police in a dumpster. It was trash day.... He got compacted with the trash in the back of the garbage truck....

Eh, trash compaction sounded much worse than it was; all he got was a busted pelvis, busted ankle and a torn urethra, as opposed to complete smushing into chunky meatsauce. He even got compacted multiple times, and still came out pretty whole and unsmushed-into-pancakes. sure, the injuries require surgery and therapy, but it's better than getting gibbed into chunky salsa.

Props to him for getting to experience getting trash compaction first hand. Now he has a great ice breaker for parties.
