Well, I do agree that too many go to college, because it dilutes the value of the degree and becomes "second high school". Even a Master's Degree has become diluted because so many went back and got them after the 90's dot-com crash, the 9/11 recession and then the Big Recession.

Hell, even the value of a Ph.D. isn't what it used to be.

Conversely, MSH is right in that you're pretty much screwed *without* a college degree. So in saying "too many go to college", I'm essentially saying "More people need to consign themselves to a life near the poverty line so that my degree is more valuable". Which is an asshole thing to say. But hey, I'm an asshole lilke that.

Except that college is four (more like five, these days) years of driving a car off a cliff every year (probably borrowing money to do so) for... what, exactly? We don't have enough degree-requiring jobs in general as it is, and there's plenty of professions that don't (or rather, shouldn't) require a degree.

People who go to college are better off in almost all areas for the rest of their lives. The problem isn't going to college. Everyone going to college is very much a good thing. The problem stems from us trying to maintain a system geared towards only some people going to college. We should instead take the model that everyone is guaranteed secondary education if they want it.

I think we need to specialize our grade schools and make college harder content wise.  English 101 should be taught to highschoolers, for instance.  If we want to ensure education for all than we should start at the bottom.

College would be much more affordable if all the luxuries were dropped.  air conditioning, cable, breakrooms, all add to the cost.

Which is why we should publicize it. Can't have everyone spending that much of their money on a certification that they essentially need.

All that stuff is a pittance in the totality of the costs, dude. I don't know if you've ever experienced living in a building without air conditioning and full of hundreds of guys, but I have, and it is not fucking pleasant. I'm not sure if the omnipresent stench or the overpowering heat is worse, but I do know that I'm glad it is cold for most of the year in Boone.

College has far more value than just getting people jobs, you know.

A good education about the world around them is necessary to be a good citizen. You know, like how RedKing was saying before; people who don't go to college (generally speaking) are stuck in their old ideas that are incredibly stupid, like being gay is evil.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Bootcamp.

I'm not saying they are the totality, but they are a great start.  Im talking about college club fees, dorm costs, etc.  By the books, dorming is too expensive, imo, and services provided, including new gyms and facilities are quite costly.

I've played with the practicality of a barebones college experience.  Just a desk, chest, chair, lamp, and bunkbed.  No frills.

Today was the last day for the morning supervisor for the summer. Before she left, she gave me a weird warning. If the the afternoon supervisor(who is taking over the whole shift) starts giving me crap, I'm to smile and put up with her crap until I can talk to the manager(who is also a total bitch).

...I think I'm in the middle of a harpy-fight. Not exactly a great place to be :-\.

Also, That people post in them. Stop making more work for the Toad. Takes longer to delete threads with more replies.
Does it? I'm pretty sure there's a button or something labeled "Delete Entire Thread". Assuming he doesn't take the time to read the responses for a laugh/banhammerwave.

What solid gold Ivy Leauge school did you attend? I didn't get a chest or a lamp. Chair, desk, bed, roommate.

Well, Toady has stated this atleast once and I'd assume him to know something about his forums. But try telling spambot hijackers to stop posting, noooo, they've gotta have their fun. Not that I haven't done that in the past.

Hofstra.  A lot of frills and a lot of extra costs along with a lot of competition.

Well no wonder you have that opinion. No public university has the kind of luxury private ones offer.

Admitting I didn't hear about the real crusades or the real WW2 until I went to college

But it gave me an unhealthy hatred of Elementary and Highschool curriculum.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with North Carolina? Have they all contracted a terminal case of crazy-stupid there?
If by "all" you mean, "the party in control of the Governor's House and state legislature", then yes.

Pretty much what MSH said. The GOP hasn't had this kind of stranglehold on power in a century or more, so they're like a kid in a candy shop. A really greedy kid with ADHD and diabetes. The part where you could argue that the state in general is coming down with the terminal stupid is that this started in 2010 with the "Tea Party Revolution", when a bunch of these fuckers campaigned as fiscal conservatives and swore up and down they had no social conservative agenda...and then once they got in promptly began ramrodding a social conservative agenda.

So it's actually going on 3 years (and two election cycles) now. I was dismayed that they held on to power through the 2012 elections, in part due to some rather brazen gerrymandering at the state district level. If they still keep their death grip on the legislature after 2014....I dunno, man. Might be time to look for the lifeboats.  :-\

You can always move here to Minnesota, we're not completely bonkers (and more importantly, the GOP controls absolutely nothing right now). :P
